What Starts with a V and Makes a Dog Tremble?

Boo jumped into the back seat of Mom’s car. Mom, Jake, and Emily were taking her somewhere, but they hadn’t told her where. In fact, they were a little hush-hush about it.

Emily slid into the seat next to her and rubbed Boo’s head. “Don’t worry, Boo. You’ll be okay.”

Boo tilted her head to the right, then to the left. What do you mean, “You’ll be okay?”

Mom gave Emily one of those “be quiet” looks.

Jake opened the car door and plopped down on the other side of Boo. “Hey, Mom. After we go to the v… “

Boo perked her ears. Where were they going that started with the letter v?

Mom shushed him. “Jake!”

“Oops! Sorry. Uh, er, can we stop for ice cream on our way home?”

Mom glared into the rearview mirror. “We’ll see.” She backed the car out the driveway and headed toward the interstate. Instead of getting on the freeway, she turned right, then left.

Uh-oh. No, they couldn’t be going to the vet. She wasn’t sick. She wasn’t hurt. She was just fine. No! This can’t be. No, no, no.

Mom turned right into the parking lot and came to a stop.

Noooooooo!
